it’s almost hackathon time! Are you ready?

As previously announced, next week is mixare (and its wordpress plugin) hackathon time!

We are looking forward to meet a lot of passionate developers, free software enthusiasts, GIS experts and hackers!

The venue is the same as the South Tyrol Free Software Conference : the TIS Innovation park in Bolzano.

We will start on Monday, November 14th at 9:00 AM (CET) and choose what to prioritize before the real work begins. Expect to find someone hanging around there until 6:00 PM. The same will happen on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

There is no hard schedule, since we hope that a lot of people will join us and bring their expertise to the community: there will be talks, coding sessions, and most of all a lot of fun .

SFSCon will take place on Friday, so we are not planning anything for November the 18th. There will be a lot of interesting talks and, at the end of the day, one about mixare!

Please let us know in the comments or via mail if you want to join us. If you are planning to travel from afar we could help you find an hotel in the neighbourhood of Bolzano, just let us know.

Join us for the mixare 1.0 hackathon

Following the success of the development sprint made last year during the SFSCon in Bolzano we have bigger plans for 2011!

Mixare for android has grown up in the past months, and nowadays supports many devices, many different releases of Android (including 3.x/Honeycomb since release 0.7) and data formats.

The time has come for a 1.0 release!

But since there are a few minor annoyances and bugs, and a new major release of Android (4.0/Ice Cream Sandwich) is about to be released, we want to make sure that Mixare is ready for such a milestone.

You are welcome to join us for the mixare 1.0 hackathon, that will take place in Bolzano the week of the SFSCon (i.e. working week 46, from 14/11/2011 to 18/11/2011). The focus will be on closing existing issues, the wordpress plugin and improving mixare user experience.

Latest development

What kept us busy in the latest months? A lot of things, among which…

a web-based and open source POIs creation tool for mixare!

Soon everyone will be able to create own collections of Point of Interests, and choose whether they are public or private.

This will work from the mixare website itself or on any wordpress-powered website around the globe. Of course the source code will be released on our github repository as free software.

While we finalize the code for release, please share in the comments what you would like to do with it!

iPhone version of mixare available in the App-Store

We are glad to announce, that mixare is now available for the iPhone 4 and 3GS (under the GPLv3)!
If you have such a iOS device please get it from the app store.

If anyone have some experience with Objektive-C, please checkout the code at github (https://github.com/mixare/mixare-iphone) – for some technical reasons, the source code and structure is different from the android version.
But we have prepared a wikipage (http://code.google.com/p/mixare/wiki/FileResponsibility) which describes the classes of the project.

The iPhone does not include all functionalities (yet) as the android version does, so feel free to  support us implementing them!

With great joy the mixare team announces a new mixare development sprint that will take place the next week in Bolzano in the framework of the Free Software Week.

Highlights of the upcoming release

It’s been a long time since the last blogpost, but everyone sure noticed the couple of market release we delivered during the summer.

It was also wonderful to welcome Miriam and Mixare in the community and to host them in Bolzano for the first “Mixare sprint” ever. An important outcome of the sprint has been a Roadmap for the upcoming releases of mixare, an lots of fun, as you can see in the image below. (in case you’re wondering it’s me (Daniele), Miriam and Hannes from left to right).

Hannes lately implemented a lot of new features that were listed in the Roadmap, and I just made available a new apk on our google code page. The contributions have been merged in the main repository a few moments ago, and the changelog is in the message that Hannes sent to our mailing list. You can get an overview of the new features by looking at the following pictures and videos that Hannes made and shared.

Nuovi sviluppatori, nuove funzioni

E’ arrivata l’estate, ed é molto caldo qui ad Appiano! Ma non vogliamo parlare di meteo in questo post. Oggi vogliamo dare il benvenuto a Miriam nella nostra community!

Miriam si occuperá dell’integrazione di twitter (e in generale di servizi aggiuntivi) in mixare. Questo sará anche l’oggetto della sua tesi (presso la facoltá di Scienze e Tecnologie informatiche della Libera Universitá di Bolzano).

Miriam ha la possibilitá di gestire l’issue tracker (link in lingua inglese) e lo aggiornerá costantemente in modo che tutti possano sapere come mixare sta evolvendo. Invitiamo tutti ad usarlo per segnalare se ci sono bug o proposte, e a segnalare le issues cui dare prioritá maggiore.

A breve ci sará una nuova versione di mixare nel market (e verrá aggiornato l’svn) che sará piú veloce, piú rifinita e… semplicemente migliore!

Piani per il futuro

Ci sono grandi sviluppi in vista per mixare! Ieri sera la Peer Srl e la R3 GIS Srl di Merano hanno deciso di unire i loro sforzi per fare in modo che mixare cresca con un ritmo più sostenuto.
Le competenze della R3 GIS sui Geographic Information Systems, Digital Terrain Models, così come le conoscenze approfondite dei segreti del GPS sono un perfetto complemento per le conoscenze relative alla User Experience knowledge della Peer internet solutions.
Le due società si sono accordate sulla roadmap che segue nel prossimo futuro:

• Supporto per formati di dati standard aggiuntivi (basati su XML)
• Miglioramento dell’interfaccia: supporto per menu, feedback agli utenti
• Feedback in caso di problemi con la qualità dei dati (distorsioni nel campo magnetico/ fix GPS vecchio o errato). Possibile modalità diagnostica per utenti avanzati?
• Integrazione con social networks: twitter con supporto per login, timeline, liste, ricerche. Forse invio di tweets con informazioni geografiche?
• Supporto per risorse dati locali (non come URI, ma nella forma di liste di oggetti passate a mixare)

R3 GIS Srl e Peer Srl credono nell’open source. Il progetto mantiene la sua licenza GPLv3 e tutti i contributi al codice avverranno nel repository pubblico così come le discussioni avverranno nella mailing list per gli sviluppatori (in lingua inglese) , in questo modo chiunque potrà intervenire o dare il proprio contributo.

Siamo molto emozionati nel constatare che la comunità continua a crescere e che compagnie con elevate competenze decidono di partecipare al progetto!

Pubblicato Launcher Demo

Questo post interessa soprattutto gli sviluppatori.

Un nuovo launcher per mixare è stato caricato pochi minuti fa nello spazio google code di mixare. Questo launcher mostra diversi aspetti dell’interazione con mixare che descriverò nel seguito.Lo trovate qui in formato apk, mentre i sorgenti sono disponibili (GPLv3) nel repository SVN del progetto. L’interfaccia del launcher così come i commenti nel codice sono in lingua inglese.

Cosa si puó vedere in questo launcher:

• Come controllare se mixare sia installato, e in caso contrario avviare una ricerca nel Market.
• Come controllare se il GPS sia abilitato, e in caso contrario mostrare la pagina delle impostazioni del telefono.
• Come passare a mixare l’url di un semplice servizio REST che risponde con alcuni dati.

Come si vede nello screenshot qui sotto, l’URL che viene chiamato è anche mostrato a schermo, in questo modo si può puntare il proprio browser a quell’url e vedere il formato della risposta.

Cliccando il pulsante “CLICK ME” verrà lanciato mixare il quale si collegherà all’URL mostrato sopra e mostrerà quattro punti intorno al telefono. Questi punti non riflettono nessun oggetto nella realtà, ma puntano nella direzione dei quattro punti cardinali (alla stessa altitudine rilevata dal GPS).

Questo launcher è un esempio del caso d’uso 3 elencato nella pagina come fare.  É importante sottolineare che sebbene questo launcher sia GPL (e quindi qualsiasi cosa sviluppata sulle sue basi dovrá utilizzare la stessa licenza) esiste la possibilitá di sviluppare un launcher proprio che interagisca con mixare senza pubblicarne i sorgenti (ad esempio se si volessero proteggere i propri dati).

Pensiamo sia giunto il momento di aggiungere qualche nuovo tipo di dato a mixare per renderlo ancora piú interessante!
Naturalmente il primo passo è trovare quali dati siano i più interessanti. Noi abbiamo fatto delle proposte in questo thread (in lingua inglese) del gruppo di discussione Google.

Ci piacerebbe sapere quali servizi tra:

• twitter / identi.ca (status.net) / buzz
• flickr / panoramio
• gowalla / foursquare / brightkite

siano i più desiderati in vista di una prossima release di mixare.
